I think Lee Lefever over at Common Craft does a mighty fine job of explaining Social Media in plain English.
From what I can understand, social media depends on interactions between people discussing about all sorts of things. By social media, people are able to share their thoughts and ideas around easily by using the internet. This can be an unbelievably great tool for communicating with each other by exchanging comments on current or past events or even providing help on certain topics. Social media exist in all sorts of forms such as instant messaging, email, web blogs, online forums and wikis.
While being a useful and cheap way of spreading thoughts and ideas, social media has become one of the best ways for people to connect with each other. Social media applications such as online forums, online social networking websites such as Myspace and Facebook, and online video sharing websites like Youtube have gain much popularity that have made a huge impact among the youth society. These media applications have proved having a good side but yet can pose danger to some people for disclosing their identity to the public eye. Like always, not everything can be perfectly good, and there will always be a downside to everything.
